Storage Standardization Woes Present New Opportunities For Tablet Developers
The primary problem for several enterprise mobile solution providers that would like
to simply port their existing web services or html application over to space that would be compatible for Android and IOS users is storage. There simply currently isn't a standardized storage solution for an online database that has been embraced by the industry. The Sql storage option that was being used by some browser manufacturers was shelved by the HTML5 Developers and the HTML5 Standards board. It wasn't a developed enough solution.
Those application developers that planned to use pure HTML5 to serve pages to tablet users were therefore forced backwards a step. Their users weren't able load an Apache MySql server combination because their tablet wouldn't support it well. Access to a database that was standardized was therefore ported to a new type of storage known as offline storage. Offline storage is useful for enterprise mobile solutions because it requires that the user grant access to the application at several different junctures, giving the client more control. On the other hand, most developers require extensive rewrites of their web applications in order to use it. Those that chose to develop using frameworks that were DB agnostic, are now looking pretty intelligent.
For
android developer, they might wonder what the big hullabaloo is all about? Why don't the HTML5 Developers just port their application to Android? The answer, of course is that java development environments like those for Android are quite different from some types of web development including PHP. For those that have developed using PHP up through this point, it doesn't appear to be an appealing option to move their codebase.
Other
HTML5 Developers have developed a different perspective. Noting that although Java Web Services have lost ground in the marketplace, there is much synergy in moving their web applications to a middle ground that has much more in common with the underpinnings of Android.
At stake is a very interesting piece of market share in unregulated Android services. Instead of adding an application and running it through a defined set of processes, HTML5 Applications can be accessed directly through webpages and therefore will run as effectively on Android as they will on PCs. The payoff continues when one considers that the iPad or IOS platform will also be able to utilize pure HTML5 applications as time moves on via the browser. Of course the largest browser manufacturer, who also happens to be the developer of Android, is making certain that IOS users also have access to the latest HTML5 capabilities by releasing their browser for both platforms. A large variety of software applications are now being leaving that will run on Android and other tablets and smartphones.
