Stormwater Management - What You Need to Know

When snow melts or rainfall runs over land, along with it are pollutants like pesticides, fertilizers and sediments that causes environmental problems. Erosion, flooding, and water pollution are called stormwater runoff; as of stormwater, residential, industrial and commercial drainages are no longer safe as well as rivers and other water formation.

This is where stormwater management enters. This is the process of managing the amount of stormwater that enters a particular area. Stormwater management includes managerial, structural or vegetative practices. Treating contaminated water through structural and control devices are one of the practices used. This is done by stormwater management companies that aim to eliminate or reduce the amount of stormwater and minimize its impact to the environment.

Water detention ponds are one of the structural Best Management Practices (BMP) implemented by stormwater companies. These detention ponds allow runoff to enter the pond and force the current water out of the pond. The runoff will stay in the pond until the next stormwater comes. This method allows pollutants to stay at the bottom of the pond and stay there that will keep them from entering the rivers.

Another stormwater bmp is porous pavement. In this process, runoff is allowed to flow through the porous pavement while removing the pollutants. The runoff will then be deposited to the soil. Although this porous pavement method does not entirely remove the pollutants, stormwater becomes cleaner and less harmful to environment.

One of the most effective stormwater bmp is landscaping practices. Stormwater management companies build ditches in residential areas and highways that will be directed to a certain area. When stormwater runoff comes, they will be directed to this area where they will be treated and deposited to grassy regions.

There are a lot of stormwater bmps available that are being implemented to put a hinder stormwater from further damaging our environment. One of the most important bmp is educating the people on the current state and how they can prevent the situation from getting worse. The present laws and ordinances are also helping in alleviating the current situation. All in all, when everyone works together, the problems can be minimized and reduced the unwanted effects of stormwater that will harm the environment.
