Students: Minimize Your Stress

As you enter your junior year in high school, you realize that you are starting to have serious thoughts about your future in college

. You are filling out applications, worrying about being accepted and thinking about leaving home for the first time. This can be a very stressful time in your life but it also can be very rewarding. There are several things you can do to ready yourself for this new adventure so that stress does not become your way of life as you complete your 'to do' list. What follows are some suggestions for getting a head start on college life so that this time will be rewarding and enjoyable rather than consistently pressure packed.

1. Certain forms of stress are normal and necessary but persistent and constant stress can be disruptive and harmful to you psychologically and physiologically. You have much to do to prepare for college so create and follow a schedule. Make a priority list of things to do and then do them. As you cross each completed task off your list you will feel better, calmer and happier; then be sure to pat yourself on the back because you deserve it.

2. Have a good idea of what kind of college you want to attend. Rule out those colleges that hold little for you and then narrow down your list to 3-5 colleges that meet your expectations. No matter where you are in this process, you must know what type of college you want to attend; what schools will actually be able to meet your expectations and goals.

3. Set and prioritize goals and keep your life as balanced as possible. Your short term objectives will give you an immediate sense of accomplishment but your long term goals will take more patience. Of course, the most important goal you will set for yourself will be to graduate so keep your eye on the prize.

4. This may be the first time in your young adult life that you and you alone are responsible for handling/budgeting your finances. Don't be embarrassed to use coupons or shop in dollar stores or cheaper markets. Get a part-time job if necessary.

5. If you haven't done so already, then begin to develop healthy habits that will hold you in good stead for college and perhaps for life. Taking care of yourself physically by eating a balanced diet, exercising and sleeping regularly and learning to relax will make it easier to cope with the many pressures that you are going to face in your new life.

These are just a few of the many suggestions out there to help you reduce the stress in your life. Learn to balance things and the many pressures and expectations facing you probably won't seem half as threatening or stressful as you anticipated.
