Realities of students' unions
Students look for opportunities to socialize in the student community and to gain prestige among their peers. Most of them dream becoming a member of students' unions. Still, participation in activities of this kind may have negative impact on learners' motivation and learning achievements. The fact is that these unions are organized without participation of adults and their statutes often consist of various misconceptions concerning student life. Thus, many of them consider hard work at one's studies to be unworthy.
Nobody wants to become an outsider. Students try to gain prestige among peers and become a member of the union by all means. Some unions require violating some college rules to prove that a student deserves becoming a member of organization. Some learners trying to meet the requirement of the union were even expelled from colleges.
Setting the priorities
Though students' unions are microcosms of adults' organizations, their leaders might be even crueler. They humiliate the freshmen who want to become members of the union and induce them to violate college rules. It is important to have a head on one's shoulders and think twice before doing something. A person needs to suppose the consequences of one's actions. Perhaps, it is better to become an outsider in the student community than to be expelled from a college.
It is important to bear in mind the primary goal of staying at college. Setting the priorities learners will realize that membership in students' unions is a minor question compared to the level of one's proficiency. Before becoming a member of a student union make sure that
its statute does not contradict college rules and your life views;
