Style Yourself Dateable

'Normal' is the ideal first impression to make on a date because the girl gets the message that you're boyfriend material

. A lot of men, however, forget this little fact by wearing all sorts of nefarious fashion statements. Your office suit and tie might not be a requirement, but a level of formality definitely is. Here are some of the styles that you should never inflict on a date, as well as some substitutes to help bring out your most stylish self.

Too Much Detail

Here's to the men who wear mega embroidered shirts, jackets with a whole platoon of patches and jeans with a kaleidoscope of pocket stitching. Are you one of them? Change that quickly. It's already a questionable fashion statement in day to day outfits, but an even more troublesome one if you're trying to impress a lady on a date.

What's so wrong with all the detail? In merchandising, every apprentice is taught to keep the packaging and decor simple so that the customer's attention isn't drawn away from the main product, that's you. By keeping your style simple and straightforward, the girl is more likely to appreciate you for yourself than the brand of jeans you wear.

Solid white button down shirts are unbeatable for their infallibility and versatility. In short, you can't go wrong with them. Whether they're dressed down with jeans or done up with a modern necktie, a plain shirt (no embroidery or design, mind you) makes you look good. Equally simple pants, jeans or slacks are also the safest bet for a date. For an event as image-crucial as a date, simple and classic is always the best way to go.

Too Much Skin

Ladies are sometimes appreciated when they show a bit of leg or cleavage; notice how few complain when Megan Fox does it. For men, however, you should keep all that skin inside, no matter how ripped or toned your body is.

In most contexts, dates should be largely about the woman. That's why you go out of your way to make her feel good and special. Scoop neck shirts, bellybutton-baring pants and mesh apparel turn the tables by trying to draw attention to you and your body. There are only two possible responses to this: your date will feel either eclipsed by your need to exhibit or disgusted because you're showing things that are better kept hidden.

For men, there are other styles to show off being risque, few of which involve displays of skin. Try a bold or a deep color, fire red usually works well, with all of its romantic associations, somewhere on your outfit. Alternatively, going for pieces that simply fit well on your body will give off a sexy vibe without your showing an extra inch of skin.

Too Much Effort

One way or another, you've probably been warned against looking like you tried too hard to look good. In the same way, you probably, one way or another, end up looking like you did try too hard. That never bodes well for a date, first or otherwise.

Dates are all about, well, your date. Arriving in an outfit that took three hours to assemble, and looks every minute of it, sends the signal that you'll end up paying more attention to yourself than to anyone else. Since most women seek partners who'll look out and care for them, they don't appreciate it's all about me messages.

Hardy Amies, one of the fashion greats, says that you ought to look like you dressed with care and then forgot all about it. Does your reflection remind you of a store display or mannequin? Loosen up! Undo that necktie just a wee bit, or throw in a few accessories that have personality. And for goodness' sake don't fidget with your clothes at the table.

Everything about you will say something about you to your date. From the way you laugh to the style statements you prefer, she'll interpret each and every one of those little items. Make sure that she'll get good readings before you even call to ask her out.
