Success Doesn't Happen by Itself

Success Doesn't Happen by Itself

Success Doesn't Happen by Itself

You have to go for it! Winning means having the courage, confidence, and determination to do whatever it takes, within your own moral code, to reach your goal. Entrepreneurship is a commitment to taking your foot off first base and streaking for second. The old Dizzy Dean saying, "it's impossible to steal second base with one foot on first," is as true in business as it is in baseball.

Ask yourself some tough questions

Are you confident in your venture? Going after a goal with doubts is a sure trip to failure. If you are not 100% certain you have a terrific product or service, do what ever it takes to make it terrific. Make it bigger, better, faster, prettier, stronger; make it sales worthy. Here's another old salt that's true, "you can't sell anything you wouldn't buy yourself."

Do you have the courage of your convictions? Asking advice, doing your homework, and testing your idea are all important. If three experts say it won't work, and you still belive in your idea plus a fire-in-the-belly need to go for it -- then do so. Give it your all and prove the experts wrong.

Don't hide behind even the best advice from others. Many of the biggest moneymaking ideas in this country would never have made it off the drawing board if some individual hadn't been willing to get behind it and push.

Don't hang your future on the convictions of others. It's your business that's at stake.

Are you willing to make sacrifices? In the early stages, being an entrepreneur is a 16 hour a day job. You lose sleep, you'll skip meals, you'll lose friends, you'll have no social life, you'll give up time with family, you'll eat, sleep and breathe the venture. The significant person in your life may think you've lost your mind. Recognize that this is bound to happen and decide upfront what you're willing to sacrifice and where you draw the line. Enroll your family in your dream; make them a part of it.

A good way to sort this out is to draw a vertical line down a sheet of paper. On one side, list everything you're willing to give up in quest of your goal. On the other side list the few things that you absolutely will not sacrifice and assign each one a daily or weekly time allotment.

Keep the list, recognizing that while sacrifices are not for ever, they may last six months, the year, five years. Is success worth it?

Create a personal balance sheet

Draw a line down another sheet of paper. This time list on one side (A) all your personal attributes that you believe will benefit the business. On the other side (B), list personal habits or weaknesses that could sabotage your success. Be honest with yourself. If you procrastinate, write it down. If you hesitate to make sales calls, write it down.

If you don't understand bookkeeping, write it down. Then work on knocking out every important item on the list. Learn to read your balance sheet. Practice making sales calls. Stop procrastinating. Every time you change a negative on the B list to a positive on the A list, you increase your value to your business.
