There are many different places where using lean management and efficient measures will come in handy

. You think of this sort of thing in top companies and organizations such as the military. These are places where being efficient and eliminating waste would be very positive things. Anytime that you can become more efficient in anything it is for the positive.

But how do you become efficient and more importantly, how do you continue to get better at it? These are questions that wise men have tried to answer over the millennia, but it is not an uncomplicated question to answer. It takes a lot of work, and I know that nobody likes to hear that work, but extra work upfront is always better than more work all the time. There are many ways to become more efficient, almost as many ways to become it as there are wastes to search for.

Waste is the enemy and you need to be able to identify the waste before you can begin to eliminate it. You've got to be able to spot the wastes and then choose which ones are worth going after and which ones you should just leave alone. In the beginning, you will want to go after the easy stuff, the low hanging fruit if you are going to. Look for things which could make an immediate impact with a minimal amount of effort and a minimal amount of investment.

Remember, if it's going to cost you more to change something than what you are going to be saving in the future, it might not be a wise investment, unless of course it's for safety reasons and it will eliminate risk to your staff. All of this sounds like common sense and it really is, but you need to have somebody on the team willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to get it started.

You need a lean champion that will explain and convince everybody on the team why the change is good, but also why it is necessary and the benefits of the change. This person will get everybody on board and get everybody fired up to really go after the problems, and once people begin to see what is expected and taught what to look for, they will soon be able to identify things that can be changed for the better on their own. You will have a staff that is looking for efficiency.
