Surgical Tech Jobs and What I Learned From Each
Surgical Tech Jobs and What I Learned From Each
There is no shortage of locations for Surgical Tech jobs. Since 2002, I have seen nearly all of them. From these experiences, I was able to gain a different insight into the job from each one and apply it to future situations.
The majority of Surgical Tech jobs are offered in hospitals. This is where I began my career as a tech in the Naval Hospital in San Diego. The value that I saw from a hospital was in the diverse surgeries that I participated in. It was a large OR with 18 rooms. I was able to learn many services including Pediatrics, Vascular, Ortho and many more.
The hospital also includes a plethora of different personalities, specifically in the surgeons. It is a positive experience to spend at least a year getting used to this. It is how I developed a tough skin from being berated until I figured out what I was doing! Upon leaving a hospital, you will have a solid grasp on the fundamentals of the job.
Clinics and offices also provide for Surgical Tech jobs. Some examples off the top of my head are general surgery clinics, orthopedic, or plastic surgery centers. The main advantage of these is that after a couple of weeks, you will be an expert in specific types of surgeries and become very adept at them.
In these situations, there are only a few surgeons that you will be operating with. You will memorize all the quirks that each one displays pretty quickly. Memorization of the procedures and instruments used comes quickly as well.
Sterile supply and processing also requires the services of Surgical Techs. These offices can be called Central Sterile Supply and Receiving or Central Processing Department, but they are the same deal across hospitals. There is a special school for this work, but Surgical Techs are still offered jobs here.
Processing of sterile instruments is an involved process. It involves cleaning the blood off, washing, inventory, wrapping and operating the steam sterilizers. My short time working this job allowed me to learn the names of instruments that I did not know very quickly since I was looking at them all day long.
Surgical Tech jobs are found in the military as well. When I worked for the Navy, I scrubbed in large hospitals, clinics and Iraq at a field hospital. Some ships also have a small OR where Surgical Techs are needed. With wars carrying on, they will be needed in the field for the foreseeable future.
Volunteer organizations also offer Surgical Tech jobs. These teams provide surgery to the poor in South America, Haiti, and all over the globe. They usually are looking for experienced workers since there is a lot of improvising in these cases.
Each Surgical Tech job has benefits and downfalls. A clinic or office will force you to become very good at specific surgeries and surgeons. Military and volunteering will make you improvise with limited gear and supplies in difficult or dangerous places. Hospitals give you a look at the profession through a wide lens and shows you the fundamentals.
