Surviving A Demanding College Professor
College students are expected to address so many aspects of life simultaneously that sometimes it's hard to keep track of everything
. One thing that students may not anticipate is dealing with a difficult professor, which can drain your energy and cause a great deal of anxiety. Consider these suggestions as you deal with this situation.
1. Try to do everything that is expected of you so that you are beyond reproach. Make sure you ask appropriate questions during class and that you have written down your homework assignments correctly. Hand in work on time, write neatly, and show up for class prepared so that there is no reason for the professor to single you out for criticism.
2. It may well be that the professor's approach is the problem for you, but seek her out after class with the mindset that you are open to her suggestions as to how you can improve your grade. Speaking to her in a personal way in a more comfortable setting may help her to realize that you are trying your best and would like her input.
3. Avoid arguing with your professor, even if she seems to be goading you into an argument. Some professors have a confrontational style, so try to answer her questions in an even tone, getting right to your point. Try to keep your cool in all your interactions with her, and remember to be courteous at all times.
4. Many professors have teaching assistants, so this may be a person to talk to for a problem such as this one. Start by asking for help with something from class that you need explained, and then you may feel comfortable discussing the professor's temperament as well.
5. Keep in mind that nothing is forever, especially for a young person in college. There is no reason you should suffer in silence, so if you have tried every other recourse to no avail, you do have the option of dropping the class and reporting the situation to the dean.
After you're done with college, you may look back on this experience and find that you've learned from it. Once you get out into the world of work, it's possible that you'll encounter a difficult boss or co-worker, and this challenge may actually equip you with strategies to deal with that eventuality. Do the best that you can for the time being, but don't forget that there are always options to make the situation better.
