Take Care of your Artwork: 5 Steps to get it right!
You have selected your art after hours of thinking over it and it has finally arrived and is hanging on your living room hall and it is the focus of all discussion amongst your friends. Then, all of a sudden you are faced with the dilemma: how do I take care of it? What are the most common things that can harm your artwork? And most importantly, what can you do to take preventive care?
Primarily, there are 5 things that can affect your artwork
1. Temperature Extreme temperatures and frequent changes in temperature can harm your artwork. Heat helps to speed deterioration while cold will cause brittleness.
So, it is not advisable to expose your artworks to extreme temperatures e.g. avoid hanging the artwork over a fire place. Ideally, temperature should be maintained between 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Dust As much as possible, dust should not be allowed to settle on an artwork this is especially true for artworks with a porous surface where dust can easily enter.
Use soft brushes or soft micro fibre cloth to remove dust from an artwork. Take special care while handling oil paintings and photographic prints. Avoid touching the surface of the artwork with bare hands as that leaves fingerprints. Always try to hold an artwork by the frame.
3. Humidity Like temperature, excess humidity or quick shifts in humidity level should be avoided. Frequent change in humidity can cause crackling of the paper or canvas. Too much humidity on the other hand will result in formation of mould on the surface.
In humid regions, ensure good ventilation where the artwork is displayed. While ceiling fans help in air circulation and can help keep moisture away, an air conditioner can also be used to dehumidify the air. Also, avoid hanging an artwork on a damp wall.
4. Light Light causes the colour pigments on an artwork to fade and in the long run, affects both paper and canvas.
Avoid exposing your artwork to direct sunlight or any harsh lights. Try to keep the focus lights on the artwork as soft as possible.
5. Acidic Materials Certain framing and storage materials are acidic in nature which causes yellowing and discolouration over a period of time.
Always use acid free materials to frame and store art. While they are marginally more expensive, they go a longway to protect your artworks from degradation.
Remember these 5 things and you will enjoy your artwork for years together.
