Take a few days off in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales

Hunter Valley is one of Australia's most notable wine-producing regions. Located in New South Wales, the area has also received international acclaim with its numerous award winning estate wines. With fantastic accommodation options, a host of activities and plenty to see, it offers holidaymakers an Australian getaway with a difference.

European settlers accidentally stumbled on the area in 1797 when Lieutenant John Shortland and his men were chasing fleeing convicts. The region quickly prospered with coal and timber industries that supplied ships in transit to Sydney and surrounding centers. By 1823, the area that is presently Dalwood-Gresford had been planted with 20 acres of river bank vineyards.

The valley quickly flourished as many people began to produce wine. These included families whose names still stand out in the industry. They are the Drayton, Tyrrell and Wilkinson families, plus the former medical doctor, turned wine-farmer, Dr Henry Lindeman. Lindeman wines are today renowned worldwide and have won a string of awards. Visitors can get a fascinating glimpse into the history of these early days at the historical museums.

April to October (winter) is the ideal time to visit the valley. During the day, the weather is clear, cool and sunny. Nights are crisp and nippy. You can lie back in a relaxing spa after a day outdoors, then have a drink in front of a cozy fire and dine by candlelight while savoring a bottle of the region's finest wines.

Naturally, the most popular activity is visiting the various wineries. This area is particularly known for its outstanding Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Semillon wines. Some major estates include Lindemans, Farrell's Wines, Wyndham Estate, Rosemount Estate, Pepper's Creek, Lake's Folly and Tyrrell's Vineyards. During a tour, you can meet the winemakers and taste wines direct from the cellars.

Apart from wine, the valley provides ideal conditions for the growing of a large variety of fresh produce. At the Tinkers Hill Vineyard, the family grows and sells superb peaches, nectarines, citrus fruits, figs, nectarines and table grapes. Picking does not take place until the crops are properly ripe. This ensures that no natural flavors are lost. You can also buy delicious home-made jams and marmalades, as well as relishes and pickles.

A horse-drawn carriage tour is the ideal way to take in the beauty of the valley. Relax in a comfortable carriage and spend the day sampling wines other locally produced delicacies like olives, chocolates and cheeses. If you prefer a bit more action, join a horse-back riding tour and experience the great outdoors in true Australian style. There are many other touring options. Details can be obtained from the local tourism office.

It's not just wine that takes center stage in Hunter Valley. This area is also home to a world renowned brewery, namely the Hunter Beer Company. It produces award winning boutique beers and has won 24 awards at the last three Australian International Annual Beer Awards. You can pop in at any time for beer-tasting, meet the brewers, or have a Brasserie lunch in the onsite beer garden.
