Take action with citizenship education and environmental initiatives
Many people are no longer content with sitting around waiting for things to just happen
, instead they want to get involved and make a difference and from this more opportunities to do so have arisen. Taking action not only benefits the organisation or person in question but it can have a significantly positive effect on the person taking the action and for this reason it will inevitably be a win-win situation every time.
Finding a cause to support can be tricky as there are so many worthwhile ones around but if you've got the time, it can be a great idea to go right to the heart of many issues and get involved in citizenship education. Citizenship education is all about taking the teaching of children and young people out of the classroom and into the world, whether this is getting them to campaign about their right to vote or it's about an environmental issue such as tar sands or the decline of bees.
The important thing to remember is that, in the words of acclaimed poet William Butler Yeats, citizenship education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a fire', in other words those getting involved need to be passionate and enthuse and instil passion in the people they are trying to help and educate. This is particularly important when it comes to education outside of the classroom because children and young people don't have to get involved in this and so whatever you are offering has to be an attractive prospect and have a very definite and obvious purpose.
Environmental initiatives are in many ways the hardest to make a success of because a lot of people struggle to see any direct impact of their seemingly insignificant actions on the world around them and in particular to them. As such, these initiatives must be exactly that, they must be new and exciting and relevant and not go over old ground; they must not simply be leaflets telling people to switch their lights off when they're not in the room or walk to work every day or even take showers not baths, they must be interactive, fun and delivered with bags of enthusiasm.
Organising environmental initiatives is just one example of citizenship education and there are many more for people to get involved with, so take action today with the help of a local business or organisation and your friends and family.
