Taking A Look At Five Of The Most Common New Year Resolutions
The Christmas period is one that's full of giving and receiving
, but the time just after this - the start of the new year - is one where a lot of people reflect on what they did during the last year and what they can aim to do in the coming year, goals that are known commonly as New Year resolutions.
Although it might seem like everyone has their own New Year resolutions, there are five particularly common resolutions, with it being highly likely to you either choose one yourself or you at least have a close friend or family member who as committed to the resolution for 2011.
1. Get fit - attending gyms, going for walks, taking up early morning jogging; starting some form of exercise to help raise your fitness levels is one of the most common resolutions to take up for the new year.
Membership applications to gyms are well-known to increase in the first few weeks of any new year and with people wanting to start afresh after the festive period, aiming to burn off everything they've ate and drank over Christmas, it's not surprising to see walking boots and home exercise equipment flying off the shelves.
2. Quit smoking - one of the most damaging - and expensive - habits anyone can have, whilst smoking may once have been popularised and to a certain extent encouraged, the negative health effects have been known for decades and if you're still smoking today, you really have no reason to be in most respects.
It may be an extremely addictive habit, but if you can kick it, you'll feel healthier, increase the chances of you living longer and also see a difference in your bank balance.
3. Spend more time with family - take a look at a standard family life in every decade from the 1990s to today and you'll see a noticeable difference in just how much time families spend together.
Due largely to work commitments but also in part to a lot of other distractions, such as TV and computer consoles, it wouldn't be surprising if you said you only had one family meal a week, even though everyone lives under the same roof.
4. Drop the debt - getting into some form of debt is considered to be the norm in today's world and whilst having a small amount of money on your credit card is often recommended to help with your credit rating (assuming you pay it off regularly), it can very easily spiral out of control.
If you're planning on making 2011 the year when you clear your debt, you need to start now - plan your monthly outgoings, tighten your belt a lot and start the new year with a fresh and optimistic outlook.
5. Take up a new hobby - whether it's reading more, learning a new language or being more involved in the community, taking up a new hobby is a great resolution to make as it's one that you're likely to uphold because for the most part it's going to be extremely enjoyable.
