Taking Up Adult Flute Lessons
Do not listen to people who discourage you from taking adult flute lessons
. They are of the opinion that adults are not capable anymore of learning a musical instrument when they pass a certain age. This is certainly proven wrong time and again by many late bloomers.
Adult flute lessons can be a rewarding experience for people who haven't been endowed with enough opportunities to discover or hone their musical talents during their childhood years.
There are a lot more misconceptions and attitudes toward adult flute education. Take heed of these myths which can prevent you from getting the most out of your adult flute lessons.
You will find that musical skills are not limited by the age of the learner. The reason why many people associate musical talent with childhood training is because many musicians have been trained early.
Childhood training isn't necessarily the biggest factor in learning music, but those who have been trained in their early years would definitely have an advantage.
Why do some adults quit their adult flute lessons? Setting wrong expectations is one reason. You are likely to get disappointed if you think that you'll see notable improvements every time you finish one flute class.
There would be days in which you'll feel that no significant improvements have been made. However, this is just a normal part of music education. Factors like mood and health indicators affect musical performance. So give your music education the time for it to run its course.
Hard work and dedication certainly have their worth but if you put too much pressure on yourself, it will not get you your desired results. It is not advisable for beginners to follow the learning pace of professional musicians.
Slowing down once in a while definitely has its own advantages. If you are anxious about learning everything in an instant, you may found yourself always dissatisfied with your performance.
It is better to enjoy the process of learning rather than set unreasonable objectives. Be patient and follow the normal pace of adult flute lessons, otherwise, you might be tempted to quit early.
Working on the flute 24/7 is not advisable. Do not hesitate to take 2 or 3 days off from your music class, because it is during rest days that your brain assimilates what you have practiced for days. Furthermore, a good rest will give you a boost to your energy levels.
On the other hand, it doesn't mean that practicing more is bad. As long as you do not burn yourself out, do so. The bottom line is that you let your musical skills develop naturally. You can also try playing longer hours but practicing on short pieces only to prevent fatigue.
Another way to ease the pressure from adult flute lessons is to measure them based on the number of pieces you practice rather than the actual time you spend.
It is hard to practice flute if you are afraid of how the people around you would react upon hearing you play. This attitude is not helpful for it inhibits self-expression and wastes valuable opportunities to get feedback.
Furthermore, aiming for perfection could ironically lead to failure if you loses sight of the essence of art. Keep in mind that music is for everyone, not just for those who are exceptionally talented.
