Task lighting is defined as light that can be directed to a specific area where a task is being worked on
. Since the bathroom is where we do a great amount of detailed grooming, task lighting becomes especially effective and essential. Having sufficient illumination for such detailed work and inspection is a necessity. Be sure to use a bright bulb like a halogen or xenon so you get the greatest amount of illumination when you need it.
You also want to avoid using recessed light fixtures directly above the vanity area as these will cause shadowing. They can be used to provide light in other parts of the bathroom where direct light isn't as necessary.
You might also consider utilizing a small concave mirror close to the vanity mirror. The curvature will magnify the image and placing small task lights around it will increase the lighting for those times where extra detail is needed.
Another part of the bathroom where sufficient lighting is often neglected is in the bathing area. This is an ideal place to set a couple of recessed lights. Shower trim and a domed glass diffuser with a gasket are recommended to keep moisture out while still providing the necessary light. A domed glass diffuser is best because it provides a good distribution of light to the total area.
Remember, decorating with light is an important element in home design because its presence adds texture, mood and color to the room. Applying sufficient task lighting to a work area is also an important consideration when designing or redecorating a space such as a bathroom.
