Teach English in Japan
There are countless job opportunities for ESL teachers in Japan. After the recent earthquake and tsunami at Fukushima, it appears that many ESL teachers are leaving Japan or not renewing their contracts. So now looks like a great time to find esl teaching jobs in Japan as it starts to rebuild from the recent disaster. But what kind of work is available for esl teachers in Japan? Well, anything you want really.
Private language institutes can be found all over Japan. In Tokyo and other major cities, many language centres can be found clustered around the main train stations. There is clearly a lot of demand for this type of institution and many people who start out teaching in Japan begin working for one of these private institutions. It can be hard work though, contact time for teaching can be long, sometimes 7 hours or more per day and due to the nature of the teaching, more often than not, classes run until 8 or 9pm in the evening. Salaries for these teaching jobs start at about 250,000 yen per month and generally do not include free accommodation, although some employers may help with finding accommodation.
Then there is the Jet program. For the under 40's the Jet program allows first degree holders to gain valuable experience as an assistant language teacher (or "ALT") at schools across Japan. This work is harder to come by than teaching at a private language school and involves detailed applications and referencing, so if you're already in Japan or thinking of moving quickly, this may not be the best option for you. Also, many of the positions are based outside of the major cities and the applicant has no control over where they may be placed. Again this doesn't suit everybody. On the positive side, the ALT positions have many more benefits than the private language schools, usually better pay, longer holidays and free or heavily subsidized accommodation.
At the top of the scale is University teaching. To get work at a university in Japan it is likely that the applicant would have at least a Masters degree, probably some research publications and a basic level of Japanese language skills. This discounts many applicants for these positions, however they are still extremely difficult jobs to come by as they are highly prized and come with lots of benefits, not least the salary and teaching load.
The best way to find work teaching in Japan is to visit an online esl recruitment website. www.esltweets.com has a variety of vacancies for teaching English in Japan and the jobs database can be found here Teach English in Japan. Good luck with your search!
