Teach Yourself Spanish - Verbs
So you want to tackle the whole "teach yourself Spanish" thing
, but keep hearing that Spanish verbs are just too difficult and confusing. Not so much so, they are only intimidating if you allow them to be. It will just take a little extra attention until you get it down.
In many ways, Spanish verbs are similar to English verbs. For example, we have all heard that big word "conjugation" and how it is such a monster. Well conjugating is nothing more than putting the correct verb with the subject noun. For instance, in English we say "we have", but "he has".
That's what you are doing with Spanish verbs as well. It just gets a little more difficult because you have a couple different verb forms for each of those subject nouns; however they are generally based on basic standard endings (-ar, -er, -ir).
These basic standard endings are applied to the "infinitive", or most basic form of the verb. As in Spanish, our English verbs have an infinitive form. In English, an infinitive verb starts with the word "to", such as "to be". The Spanish infinitive is usually a single word, such as "estar" (to be). So when you begin to teach yourself Spanish, learning the Spanish infinitives will help you get far.
As you go along, there will be exceptions to the rule, just as in English. Remember those irregular verbs you had to learn about in grammar class? The English infinitive "to be" is one of those. Instead of saying "I be" or "you be", we state "I am" or "you are".
There are Spanish verbs that follow this train as well. The Spanish verb "ser" is another form of "to be". Instead of "yo (I) ser" or "tu (you) ser", we use "yo soy" and "tu eres".
Another thing you'll learn as you teach yourself Spanish is Spanish verb tenses. A verb tense is just a distinction of time. For instance, the past tense of "be" is "was"; simple, really. Of course there are the regulars and irregulars, as in everything, but once you get the gist of it, you'll do well. "Jump" and "jumped" would be a regular verb tense, while the example above ("be" to "was") is an irregular form (because the word is changed).
Don't get me wrong, there is a lot to learn, but when you break down the "monster" words to their most simple meaning, it's easier to understand what you are doing. Besides if you speak English, you already know the basics of how to do each of these things, you just have to learn the Spanish words.
