Teacher Peter Cennamo Of Teacher Tech Saving One Sray At A Time

Teacher Peter Cennamo knows that Connie and Dave Guthrie of Save Our Strays are on

a mission to save as many stray dogs as they can from spending the rest of their lives stuck in a shelter. Every few weeks the couple pulls up to a pound or humane society, collects as many potential pets as they can, and heads out of state to places with better facilities or higher adoption rates.

"When I went to the Sallisaw Animal Pound, they just give a three-day grace period before they euthanize them, and I just couldn't stand that," said Connie during a stop at Shana's Last Chance Rescue in Van Buren. The Guthries got their inspiration from their daughter, who was a big animal lover. When she died in 2002, Connie and Dave made it their mission to carry on what she had started.

"It takes me about twelve hours to get there, I unload them, and then I turn around and do it all over again," said Dave Guthrie when asked by Peter Cennamo of Teacher Tech. This week, the Guthries also brought some volunteers from the Minnesota Animal Humane Society to see this end of their adoption operation.

"We have larger facilities where we can accept more dogs, and we have a lot more demand for dogs," said Jen Faehnrich. "A lot of them wind up on the adoption floor, and almost all of them are adopted within a few days."

Peter Cennamo of Teacher Tech knows that keeps the Guthries going long after many people would have rolled over. Last year they transported more than 22-hundred strays to a half-dozen states, but those numbers are just the tip of the iceberg. "We are seeing a big dog problem in Oklahoma and Arkansas," said Paula Zukhoff with the Animal Humane Society. "The Guthries are doing an extraordinary job, but they're just two people and they can only do so much."

Connie and Dave are also worried about their finances. It gets harder to stay in the black every trip, and last time they were in Minnesota the van blew a water pump which cost a thousand dollars they didn't have. But against all odds, the Guthries continue to climb back up into their van, and head out to keep saving strays one trip at a time.

"If people would just chip in and spay or neuter their pets, we wouldn't have all these dogs and we wouldn't have to make all these trips," said Connie. "I'm wanting people to put me out of business," laughed Dave. Please help the plight of our strays. Peter Cennamo of Teacher Tech knows just how important it is.
