TEACHER EMPOWERMENT
Teacher plays the central role in a school. All inspiration to children, to parents, to management comes from teachers. They are the human resources, should be moulded, valued and empowered. Planets like students are enlightened by the rays of sun like teacher. So here an empowered teacher is the necessity of the society. Empowering teachers includes involving them in various decision making process, valuing them through proper respect & salary and enriching their knowledge through training & professional growth. The happiest, calm and progressive teacher is he who is given proper value, direction and autonomy in the organization. Empowering teachers build the reputation of the principal, help in the problem solving and takes the institution to its height.
Teacher is the centre, the leader to lead the future generation, should be empowered so that he can use his utmost potentiality to make the learning environment very strong. A school starts with teachers and ends with teachers. Empowering teachers leads to empowering the children and school. The knowledge which spread in the class depend upon the teacher. As the enlightened teacher, so the enlightened class.
Frymier rightly states that "In any attempt to improve education, teachers are central". Collective decision making is better than a single man's decision. It may be the event of framing school calendar or taking a new decision to implement, participation of teachers enhances the quality of it. By participation in decision or problem solving process, teachers become more innovative and obedient to the organization. By this teachers become dedicated and see the organization as family. Involving them is giving value to them. Shared decision making practice also improves the problem solving capacity of the teachers. Teachers feel commitment and go for change and progress. It also makes teachers more accountable for their work. Empowered teachers have the problem solving attitude. They take the problem of the school as their own and try to solve as leaders.
Sometimes school management encourages teachers to tryout new ideas and approaches. This further motivates teachers to do something new in autonomous and free atmosphere which improve the school research and fame. Dividing the power of the school by giving departments and autonomy increases responsibility of teachers. Giving autonomy means sense of freedom to make certain decisions.
Management must send teachers to attend training programme to gain more knowledge for bringing change within them and in children. Enhancing the skills of teachers through training and professional support make teachers worthy and assets of the school.
Respecting teachers and praising their positive qualities increase their values. Support of the management and giving value to them help in retaining teacher force in the organization and add quality to them.
Another way of empowering teachers is to give good salary and other facilities to them which gives importance to their life and encourage to work progressively. Giving good working condition and making them technocrats make them self sufficient. Management should see the work-life balance of teachers.
Teacher empowerment means adding more hands, more brains and more feet in running the institution. Sharing power with teachers, involving them in decision making, giving right value in school and outside, giving good working condition to them and making work-life balance will definitely make the institution rich and prosperous. If you give importance, you will get importance. When teachers play the change agent in the school, teacher's empowerment is the need of the hour.
