Teaching puppies not to bite does not need to be an abusive situation in which you
smack your pup in the face whenever it takes a small bite out of you. This type of conduct on your part is just plain harsh and does not get rid of the biting problem anyway. It is usually normal for little puppies to want to nip or bite at things especially whenever they happen to be teething.
The following is also necessary to understand that puppies and dogs bite and nip within the normal process of playing. This is part of the pack mentality that has already been past down from the ancestors of the dog species. In a pack, puppies will nip and bite one another and they honestly have no idea exactly how hard they're biting until a bitten puppy or dog yelps.
Teaching puppies not to bite is important simply because they now need to conform to appropriate behavior inside a family home environment. They need to abandon the wild pack habits that was common before man domesticated dogs a millennia ago.
One method for teaching puppies not to bite is to obtain a spray bottle filled up with water that can easily sprayed in their face if they begin to bite or nip at you. This will not do any harm to the puppy but startles them and begins a process of negative reinforcement. They begin to relate biting with having a face complete with water and soon their little brain will understands that to prevent the water they must not bite.
Another way for teaching puppies not to bite is to fill up an empty can with coins and when the puppy starts to bite say "Simply no!" in a loud voice and begin to tremble the can intensely. Puppies seem to dislike the rattling noises that this produces and definitely will back away instantly. Once again, the puppy is shocked by the loud noise but not hurt in any way.
Another way of training puppies not to bite is giving them the cold shoulder when they bite you. Now what you want to do is turn your body completely around and ignore your puppy. Do not make any contact with him at all. You will want to do this for about 20-30 seconds if you happen to do it any longer your puppy will probably forget what he is being punished for and will find something else to play with.
Regardless of which method you decide you have to be consistent in your use of the method and the timing of the use. A puppy has a pretty short attention span and cannot connect cause and effect around events unless they're in close proximity to each other. If you begin the negative reinforcement with either the spray bottle or coin filled can just as the biting begins, the biting should not last very long. Then again, if you wait until the biting gets out of hand, reversing the behavior will take more time.
