Teaching Teens Safe Driving Principles
The passing of the driver's license test and the gaining of freedom that comes along
with the ability to drive is a very exciting time in a teenager's life. However, just because they were able to pass the exam does not always mean that they are fully equipped to handle the dangers of the road.
Most individuals that get their license at sixteen have really not had that much practice. Though they are able to start driving with another licensed adult present several months before they actually come of age, very often they are not able to get the amount of hours in that it takes to really be prepared.
For the most part, the driving test is usually fairly simple to pass, as long as one knows proper parking techniques and follows laws like stops and speed limits. Therefore, when drivers get their license, they still may not be fully ready to drive in traffic and on roads and freeways.
Not only is this a danger to other experienced drivers on the road, it can put your teenager's life at risk. If they are a novice at operating a vehicle and are not able to handle challenging situations or emergencies that they may be put in, it could mean injury or death.
Almost fifty thousand Americans each year lose their lives in automobile accidents. Males between the ages of fifteen and twenty-four have been recorded as the most likely to be involved or killed in these types of situations.
No matter how smart or skilled an individual is, they can still make mistakes on a whim or when faced with trouble. It is important that one knows how to respond when faced with a collision or a drunk driver that is coming their way.
The first thing that those who are learning to drive should know is that one must always make use of the safety features that have been provided for them, namely seat belts. Many deaths each year could have been prevented if the individual had buckled up and protected themselves with their belt.
Other things included on and in the vehicle that can possibly save an individual's life are safety glass, padded dashboards, air bags, collapsible steering columns, and anti-locking breaks. The majority of modern vehicles are created with caution in mind, but you may wish to check the safety features of the automobile that your teen will be driving.
Some parents may wish to splurge and purchase one for their son or daughter; though this is not always necessary, you may be able to find a more modern ride with better safety enhancements. Preventing the injury or death of an adolescent driver is often easier or more possible if they are enrolled in driver's education classes.
Being informed is extremely important, and most people in their teens are under the impression that serious accidents will not happen to them; therefore, they do not avoid situations that could be hazardous. The majority of teen-related accidents are caused when they drive at night, are with friends and not paying proper attention, are not buckled up, are drowsy, may be distracted, or under the influence of alcohol or other mind-altering substances.
Adolescents should know and be aware that getting behind the wheel in any of these situations is dangerous and could cost them their lives. It may be necessary for parents to enact household rules for driving that their child must follow.
There should also be a set list of consequences that will develop if they refrain from keeping the rules. Knowing this ahead of time will make it easier for you as the parent if they happen to not follow them, but will also set a standard for them to live by and try to excel at.
Creating a standard that youth vehicle operators are required to follow will help keep them safe and possibly help them to better understand the safety and caution that is required of being on the road. Make sure that your son or daughter understands the negative outcomes that could develop from driving at night when tired, being distracted in the vehicle, and being under the influence of substances.
Make sure that they have a safety zone to sleep or stay at when they are out but too tired to drive home. Following these precautions and being sure that your adolescent is informed can save their life, as well as the lives of others that are on the roads.
