Teaching Your Children The Importance Of Dental Care

Teaching children the importance of dental care isn't easy-as a child

, it is hard to understand the concept of plaque, bacteria, and cavities. Taking a child to the dentist often leads to tears, tantrums, and an exhausted mom.

However, it doesn't have to be this way. Starting to train your children when they are very young to take care of their teeth and even have fun at the dentist, can easily be a way to help them have healthy tooth habits for the rest of their lives.

To begin, use their interests to their advantage. There are many affordable dental products available that are attractive to children - you can find an affordable dental toothbrush and affordable dental toothpaste with almost any character that your child loves to watch on TV.

If your child has an emotional bond to Minnie Mouse, then buy her an affordable dental toothbrush shaped like Minnie, and when it is time to brush her teeth, let her know that Minnie Mouse wants to help her get her teeth clean! This will help your children to look forward to brushing their teeth morning and night.

Try to make your child's brushing experience as fun as possible. If your children like to sing, then create a special song to sing to them for the duration of the brushing.

A brushing song also gives them a time frame for how long they should be brushing. Many children want to briskly swipe the toothbrush across their teeth once and call it good - having a song or chant ready will help them to be a little more thorough.

You can even make it a game to see if they can brush their teeth for a full two minutes. Keep it fun, but teach them about how important brushing is at the same time.

You can teach them this importance by letting your kids know that plaque causes cavities that hurt, and make it hard to eat might encourage them to be preventive with their dental care for a healthier, more affordable dental future. One way to help them understand, is to explain plaque is like "sugar bugs" that stick to your teeth and cause cavities, resulting in having to see the dentist more often.

While you should be careful not to scare them, you can still teach them that this is very yucky, and their tooth brush can help them to not have to go to the dentist as often. Teach your children the proper techniques of brushing their teeth.

Think back to all of the tips your own dentist gave you and share them with your child. Important tips to remember are to brush in a circular motion for at least thirty seconds, and to make sure you reach every tooth surface - every front, back, and side.

For those younger, independent children who are determined to brush themselves but do not yet have the eye-hand coordination to do a thorough job, brush their teeth for them after they have had a turn. You can even brush your teeth together, and show them by example.

Start to teach them that flossing at a young age is also very important. There is some floss available which is bubble gum or fruit flavored, and this can be a fun alternative to mint for kids.

You can teach them a song to help them get all their teeth, or at least to keep them focused. This can turn out to be a fun time in the morning and before bed to bond and play with your children.

When it comes to going to the dentist, there are some dentists which are much more child-friendly than others. Some offices will include toy boxes, little pets to hold, and even a chest where they can choose a small toy after their appointment is complete.

This can make going to the dentist a positive, and even anticipated event. If you child has fear and trepidation beforehand, speak to the office privately about making the child's experience positive, and being sensitive to their fear.

The sooner you help them to keep their teeth and gums healthy, the better. You are teaching them healthy habits which will help them throughout the rest of their lives.
