Television For Children Its Fun Entertaining And Educational
TV executives have always understood that a large part of their audience is made up of children
. So, from the very beginning, part of every networks programming was devoted to the 10-year-old-and-under set.
One of the very first TV shows to capture a youthful audience (and you need to be a bit long in the tooth to remember) was The Howdy Doody Show. It featured a live audience of very young children, an adult male star named Buffalo Bob and a collection of puppets, the most prominent of which was, of course, Howdy Doody.
That show was immensely popular throughout the decade of the 1950s. It was in the 1960s that a new show emerged that, over time, became even more popular. It featured a band of lovable puppets known as Muppets and included such endearing characters as Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog and the gruff, but lovable Oscar the Grouch.
This show has so captivated children, from the day it first appeared on TV screens, that it remains a viable and popular TV program even today, years and years after its debut. There have been many other fine shows, of course.
Think back to the 1950s and each Sunday evening Walt Disney Presents provided enchanting programming for kids and their parents to watch together. The shows always had a huge audience and each Sunday night would feature programming from Adventure Land or Frontier Land or some other magical land that emanated from Disneys fertile imagination.
Throughout all of the years, from TVs earliest days to its high-tech present, cartoons have been a staple of the entertainment package made available to young viewers. Early cartoons were, of course, somewhat rough around the edges and unsophisticated compared to what is currently available. Nevertheless, young audiences stayed close to their TV sets when Farmer Brown and others filled the screen.
Is there still lots of programming devoted entirely to the entertainment and education of youngsters? You bet and one of the best shows currently on TV screens all over America features the charming adventures of a very gentle purple dragon named Barney. Created for very young boys and girls, this show attempts to impart a simple lesson each time it airs. And dont forget: before he passed away, Mr. Rogers spent countless years gently entertaining and instructing the very young with simple, but important lessons. He was beloved by the kids who watched him and by their parents.
Obviously, TV has always played an important role in the development of young people. Thats not likely to change anytime soon.
