Texas Hold Em Beginner Mistakes Overview - Texas Hold Em Hands and More

When a lot of new players start to play Texas hold em they wonder why they do not win more and they even sometimes wonder why they have won a hand. Perhaps what has lead them to start playing poker was a TV show or a friend who seems to be doing well (and has a few tales of great wins), on or offline. Now all the new player seems to be doing is paying for something that they envisioned would be paying them something back, be that knowledge, entertainment or some amount of success.

If this is you, that is OK. We all start somewhere and the reason I have an insight into this is because I myself have been there. Just remember, nobody was born to play poker. These things, like anything worthwhile, take time to learn.

You should be folding more of your starting hands than playing them. Texas hold em hands are not what win games, it is the player. Sure, if you have paid the big blind and can call at no extra cost, do it. There may be a great hand waiting for you. Probably not though. And remember, if the other players have stayed in the game and not folded, they had something to start with where as you did not.

When you start out, play VERY tight. What I mean is, only play really great hands and do not just chase after every pair you get, even if it is aces. The idea is not to throw everything you have in order to win but to see the bigger picture, you could lose, that is a chance. Minimise your loses to gain the maximum amount of money at the end.

Tilting is a beginners worst nightmare. Tilting is when a player gets upset or annoyed by losing a previous hand. They then start to approach the game in an aggressive manner and play any hand that lands, through frustration. It is pretty stupid and really adolescent. I used to do it, ages ago, it is not from the brightest days of my poker career but I recognised it quite quick and stopped doing it. Players just need to stick with it and remain emotionless. If all else fails, leave the table before you donate your money to the other players.

Another bad move (which I have never made!) is imitation. The new player has seen someone else pull off a great hand and win and they think that to get the same hand will mean the same result. The whole logic to this really confuses me, mainly because there is no logic to it. You play the players via the game rules, you do not really "play the cards" more the players.

The "bully raiser" is another funny part that people can play. The idea is that they raise like crazy near enough every hand and due to the other players not wanting to lose money to someone that has a great hand, they fold. This "bullying" strategy can work but it will not last forever. People either get wise to this technique and call him out when they have a good hand rather than great or nature takes its course and someone does have a good or great hand and the bully is beat.

If you have been making these sorts of mistakes there is not too much to worry about as most players have made these mistakes at the start. What you are looking for here is to identify this mistakes and change your style so that you start to win more. There are a lot of contradictions in Texas hold em and in the Texas hold em hands themselves. The instinctual choice might not always be the right one.
