The Origin of Thanksgiving Day

The origin of Thanksgiving has been traced back to the originator of American history. In 1620, the famous "Mayflower" ship loaded with 102 Puritans who were unbearable to Britain religious persecution towards for America. In the winter of the turn of 1620 and 1621, they got in the trouble of hunger and cold. After the winter, only 50 people were alive. Based on the belief that comers were guests, Indian brought necessity for the immigration, and taught them to plant crops like corn, pumpkin, and how to fish, etc.


However, the first real thanksgiving started in 1623, when they gave thanks for rain that ended a drought. The early thanksgiving was celebrated in the form of a special church service, rather than a feast, as is common today.

Gradually, in the second half of the 1600s, thanksgivings after the harvest became more popular and started to develop annual events. But it was celebrated on different days in different places in similar ways, what were different from the modern holiday in some places was that there were more than one thanksgiving each year, prayer and fasting are included in the celebrations. In 1789 it is George Washington, the first president of the United States, who proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day. In fact, the similar tradition to the modern one originated in 1947, since then, the president has been presented with a live turkey, after that the "turkey" is kept in a farm peacefully.

Customs and Culture of Thanksgiving Day

On every Thanksgiving Day, the United States is very busy throughout the whole country, Christians go to church to make thanksgiving by the custom, make-up demonstrations, drama or sports competitions are held everywhere in cities and towns. During this holiday, relatives separated each other for a year will come back from everyplace to get family reunions and enjoy Thanksgiving meal like "turkey". Also, it is traditional for families and friends to get together for a large meal. Various types of potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, maize and other seasonal vegetables, pumpkin pie is also included. Many of these foods were not available in Europe at the time of the first settlers and are native to the Americas. This is also their symbolism of giving thanks for a good harvest in a new country.

The most famous celebration in the United States is Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade starting from 1924. Some parades or festivities are also seen as the marks that the Christmas shopping season opens. At this time, many football games are played as a popular activity. Some people have a four-day holiday and many of them will have a plan for trip out of town or visiting friends and family.


Public life

It is one of the busiest periods for travel, many families and groups of friends get together for Thanksgiving, so congestion and overcrowding is common during that time. Other customs may have a little difference in different places. Most organizations like government offices, schools, businesses, etc. are closed on Thanksgiving Day. They allow staff to have a four-day weekend offices and businesses are closed on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day. An extra day for the Thanksgiving holiday is also possible. Generally, Thanksgiving Day is an important holiday in some States, such as Maine and West Virginia and so on.
