The 5 Best Hikes In the World
Where are the best places to go hiking in the entire world? The answer to that question is different for everyone, depending on what kind of shape you're in, what kind of scenery you like and how well you tolerate sharing the trail with other people.
Still, it's hard to argue that the following trails are anything less than the crme de la crme. Choose your favorite, grab your pack and your passport and enjoy!
Tongariro Northern Circuit, New Zealand
This two to three-day long hike takes you past an active volcano, the same one used to portray "Mount Doom" in the Lord of the Rings movies, plus other interesting geological features like boiling pools of mud. Unlike the hobbits in the Lord of the Rings, though, you won't have to worry about sleeping on rocks. Furnished huts along the route allow you to sleep in style and comfort.
Annapurna Circuit, Nepal
This classic trek takes you on a journey through breathtaking Himalayan scenery. The Annapurna circuit takes about three weeks to complete, and while it's still a challenge, it's much less difficult than hiking to Everest base camp. Lodging is available along the way.
Haute Route through France and Switzerland
The "Haute Route" takes you through incredible Alpine scenery in a 12-day journey from Chamonix, France to Zermatt, Switzerland. Proof that backpacking doesn't have to mean "roughing it," the huts along the Haute Route serve haute cuisine and local wines to hungry travelers.
Cinque Terre, Italy
This hike is a little bit more civilized, but still an excellent experience. Hike through five quaint fishing villages along the Italian coast. Stunning scenery and delicious food are the main attractions.
Landmannalaugar, Iceland
Gorgeous Technicolor mountains, otherworldly lava fields and soothing hot springs make this a trip to remember.
If you decide to hike these trails, don't forget to apply for your passport well in advance. Even if you order expedited service from the government, you can expect to wait 3 weeks or longer. However, if you do find yourself needing a passport at the last minute, you can make an appointment at a regional passport agency office or use a private company like RushMyPassport.
