The AL Cy Young Race Heads East on Satellite TV

The AL Cy Young Race Heads East on Satellite TV

Everyone knows the AL East packs a wallop, what with the Rays, Yankees and Red Sox all jockeying for position. As you might expect, there are a number of MVP candidates coming from these three teams. More surprising, however, would be the fact that the Cy Young looks to come out of the East as well. With Zack Greinke struggling and Roy Halladay in the National League, the door has been opened to AL East hurlers. Follow these five pitchers on satellite TV as push comes to shove in the pennant race.

1. Phil Hughes. Dominant in the minors and out of the bullpen but never as a major league starter, Hughes turned the corner in 2010. In fact, he has to be considered the favorite in the early Cy Young Award race, considering his high strikeout count and impeccable win-loss record. Will Hughes crumble under the burden of his extended innings? It will be a very telling August and September; the Yankees could end up constraining Hughes by limiting his innings down the stretch.

2. Clay Bucholz. Bucholz, like Hughes, has dominated at times but never consistently so on the big league club. His 2010 season is something else, as start after start he's been lights-out for an otherwise inconsistent Boston rotation. Satellite TV subscribers have been keeping Bucholz and Hughes on split screen to catch the best two starters in the American League both of which are playing in the AL East.

3. David Price. The Rays have always has their share of tough starters, but they are typically named Garza, Kazmir and Shields. David Price, one of the heroes of the 2009 season, has entered the starting rotation and been the lockdown guy for the Rays. Like Hughes and Bucholz, the question will be how long he can keep up the push in 2010. Follow the Rays HD networks to see if Price will continue to shut down the league's toughest lineups with ease.

4. Andy Pettitte. While it's not typical to see a Cy Young candidate who is Andy Pettitte's age, the nearly impossible won-loss record and sterling ERA have kept fireballer Phil Hughes with some competition on the same team. Pettitte is pitching at a level without parallel in the league. He doesn't strike out a ton of batters, but he is getting out of so many jams with the ground-ball double play. Follow the dream season of Pettitte and the Yankees on YES in high definition.

5. Jon Lester. Like Pettitte and Hughes, Bucholz has some competition for the Cy Young from another member of the Boston staff. Lester started slow (as is usual for the lefty) but has taken off since the calendar struck May. Keeping the ball down and changing speeds is his specialty, but Lester is also a strike-out artist of the highest order. All his starts are playing on the NESN network for satellite TV subscribers. Keep up with the unusually tight race this summer and see if the division yields the winner.
