The Abel Prize As An Annual Mathematical International Prize

The Abel Prize is an annual prize of international importance which is presented for prominent achievements in the field of Mathematics

.

It is one of the most prestigious awards in mathematics and comes with a monetary award of six million kroner.

Niels Henrik Abel

Niels Henrik Abel was a noted Norwegian mathematician who proved the impossibility of solving the quintic equation in radicals. Abel was fully involved in the mathematics; his interrelations with the science were quite self-sufficient, without profit. Abel studied figures, because he could not live without them. Figures and equations did not give him necessary subsistence and the scientist was constantly in need of money. In 1862 being in Paris and presenting his scientific works, Abel had to drive to Berlin because of the lack of money in a cold, breezy post-chaise. During the trip he caught a cold.

Disease developed. Abel's life was short: the scientist died of tuberculosis at the age of 26. The amount of his researches is surprising. E. g. in a famous five-volume encyclopedia there are 18 articles in which Abel's name is noticed and more than 50 notions connected with his name.

International prize

International prize is a widespread phenomenon. There is no Nobel Prize in mathematic branch. That is why Abel Prize has often been described as the "mathematician's Nobel" prize. There is one more award in mathematicians' sphere: it is Fields Medal; medal, not a prize. Besides, Abel's Prize will be spent to stimulation of children's and teenager's interest to mathematic.

Unfortunately, nowadays the youth do not understand why a person may devote his/her life to such science as mathematics. That is why this Prize was made up: Mathematics is so important that people are willing to pay large sums of money for boring theorems.
