Ever hit a fire hydrant while backing up? Was it another car or a postbox instead? If all three comes back as a no, you must be driving a small car, or nothing at all, everyone totals something during their first year or two. It can be dramatically helped, SUV drivers may rejoice, with a back up camera system. If you've never driven a car with such a system you'll feel at first that you've grown an eye on the back of the car, it's that much better than the rear view mirrors.

The problem with the mirrors is that they're at the front. How could something at the front of the car let you know about things that are in no direct line of sight for them? Sometimes it's also mentioned that they distort the image in such a way that they make it hard for the inexperienced driver to judge the distance. Back-up sensors are built into most new cars, but they give only a partial solution to the problem.

For example, there could be someone standing at the back of your car and your sensors wouldn't give as much as a squeak at times. It's because these are ultra-sonic sensors similar to that of a bat, and this technology is far from being perfect. If there is a very slim object at the back of the car it could slip through between sensors. The problem is that people with this system set up in their car tend to think that they're protected against hitting anything ever again, and based on this fake security they back up with full-throttle until the thing bleeps.

Back-up cameras can't be fooled that way. No more hitting things while in reverse. A camera is only a whisker more expensive than a sensor net, but it's that much better. It's your third eye right on the license plate. If something is behind the car, you'll know about it before it's too late, and thanks to the lower rate of distortion you can judge distances better as well. There is no rule stating that you shouldn't use it with an already working radar system, but it's not needed to combine the two.

The best part of rear-view cameras is that they work perfectly with big body cars, such as pick-up trucks and SUVs. You don't make too much use of the inside rear mirror that case, you could even buy a set that replaces it to the image coming from the camera. Sets are often bought instead of a separate camera. The reasoning behind this step is that this way you're saving some time on the process of assembly. If that's not something you're overly concerned about, the connectors that each device use should be.

They're most often fit with a special connector that can be transformed to 75 Ohm coax, which is the one you'll be working with, obviously in case you're not using a complete set. The benefit of not working with a set however is that you can use all your existing video sources with the screen of your preference. They can share monitor space with the GPS, on-board computer and a DVD player.
