The Basic Techniques of Puppy Leash Training

Getting a new puppy is a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. They are cute and they are very friendly. The only downside to getting a new puppy is that they are untrained. One of the most important things to do when you have a new four legged friend is puppy leash training. In order to do this there are three simple steps.

Step 1 is to get a collar for your new puppy. As soon as you get home, you need to do this. The best type of collar to get is a simple lightweight leather collar. Place it on your puppy while you are playing or while he is eating. This will distract the puppy and it will make it a lot easier to slip the collar over its head.

He will probably try to pull the collar off, but this is normal. Puppies are not used to collars yet because they have not been introduced to them. Just leave the collar on him and wait until he settles down. This will show him that he is okay, and that the collar is doing no harm to him. Praise your new best friend by giving him a treat. This will show him that having the collar on is a good thing.

Step 2 is to introduce the leash to your puppy. This is the most important step to puppy leash training. The best type of leash to use for this step is a very lightweight and thin one. At most pet stores they will sell leashes just for training a dog. Clip the leash to the puppy's collar and just let him drag it around the house. Always supervise him so that the leash is not tangled on anything. Again, give your puppy a treat to show him that what he is doing is correct.

Step 3 is to pick up the other end of the leash and take him for a walk around the house. Don't yank on the leash. Always make sure that there is adequate space between you and your puppy. He will most likely walk right next to you. If he sits down, do not pull on the leash to make him get up. Let him get used to the idea of walking.

After the puppy is used to taking a walk around the house, take him outside for a short walk around your yard. This will introduce him to the outside world, and you can try to get him to start potty training.

Puppy leash training really is not as hard as it seems. If you follow these simple steps it should not be a problem. It can be a little difficult at times, but with a little patience and perseverance, you will be taking your puppy on walks with you all the time.
