The Basics Of A Baby Stroller
What to know about a baby stroller usually involves only a few key pieces of information
, though many are surprised when they find out just how long some strollers have been around. They began with the English, who call one type a perambulator or "pram, " while they're known as baby carriages or baby pushers elsewhere.
Actually, a carriage is slightly different from strollers when it comes to baby transport. Carriages are usually for newborns and the baby is laid flat on its back and looking towards the person pushing the carriage. On the other hand, strollers or buggies, as they're called in England, are intended for babies up to three years old, and the baby will face away, towards the front.
The progenitor of strollers today is what the English refer to as a perambulator, or pram. It was developed around 1733 in England by a man who designed and built gardens. They continued to develop, both in England and in North America, over the ensuing centuries until the first version made with a frame of lightweight aluminum and that was foldable came onto the scene in 1965.
Since then, strollers have developed in an evolutionary manner, along with the accessories and features that go with them. For sure, strollers come made for almost every circumstance, including some made specifically for jogging parents with others made to be broken down into components for travel.
These strollers are known more as travel systems, and they come with detachable car seats that sit on top of a chassis and frame. It's that frame and chassis that can be broken down and folded up very quickly for storage in an automobile trunk or in the cargo hold of an aircraft, for example.
In general, these travel systems are intended for babies up to three years of age. After that, if desired, other travel systems can take on the task of carrying around a child of that age, though it's usually the case that only a child car seat is required for travel at that time. What's for sure is that today's strollers are very much more adaptable and versatile than those from a couple of decades ago.
When considering going with a baby stroller, it's always a good idea to look at one that's as versatile as can be while also staying within a preferred budget. Fortunately, there's a literal smorgasbord of choices and styles that a parent can select from quite easily. Prices can be extremely reasonable for a basic foldable model while costing several hundred dollars or more for some of the more complex.
