The Basics Of Gestational Diabetes

While pregnancies are viewed as blessings to complete a married life

, there are many complications that go along which may lead to risk and danger to both mother and child. One of the greatest fears to develop during a pregnancy is gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is the complication that block production of insulin. Due to the many hormonal changes in a woman's body brought about by the pregnancy, insulin production often does not function properly leading to many complications. The following are the risk factors to develop this condition:

1) The pregnant woman is above twenty five years of age;

2) The pregnant woman has a family history of diabetes;

3) The pregnant woman has given birth to a baby above nine pounds at birth or has a birth defect;

4) The pregnant woman's urine has glucose during one of the prenatal checkups;

5) The pregnant woman suffers from hypertension;

6) The pregnancy has a high presence of amniotic fluid;

7) The woman has had a previous miscarriage or gave birth to a stillborn baby;

8) The woman was overweight prior to pregnancy;

Gestational diabetes does not have outward signs to indicate the development of the condition. This is a temporary form of diabetes and the woman's blood glucose levels return to normal after delivery. When the following symptoms are felt by the pregnant woman, it is best to have a blood sugar level checkup to determine if the condition is present. The symptoms are as follows:

a) Blurry vision;

b) Quickness to fatigue;

c) Frequent infections to the bladder, vaginal area or the skin;

d) Increased thirst needing to be quenched;

e) Frequency to urination;

f) Frequency to be nauseous and vomiting;

g) Weight loss despite having increased appetite;

In order to be sure that the pregnancy suffers from gestational diabetes, the quickest way is to have an oral glucose tolerance test between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy. When the woman has all of the risk factors, then having the glucose test would surely determine if the pregnancy has this condition as a complication.

Determining if gestational diabetes is present must be done in order to prevent any complications to develop in both the mother and the child. The following are the complications from this condition:

1) Delivery related complications, such as tearing or the requirement of caesarean section delivery due to the infant's large size;

2) Development of adult onset diabetes later in life;

3) Increased risk of death for the newborn or stillbirth;

4) Low blood sugar levels for the newborn;

So if you become pregnant with your spouse, have your blood sugar levels checked regularly to prevent any further complications from gestational diabetes.
