The Basics Of Industrial Heat Exchangers

Heat Exchangers are devices that are used to control temperature of a system or substance

. There are different types Heat Exchangers available in the market but the operational basics remain same in all of them. In Heat Exchangers, there is a thermally conducting element that separates two fluids. Temperature regulation is possible by means of heat exchange that takes place between the two fluids.

Classification Of Industrial Heat Exchangers:

Broadly, Industrial Heat Exchangers can be classified into main categories on the basis of heat transfer process. The classifications are:-

In Indirect Contact Type- In Indirect Contact Type Heat Exchangers, there is a heat transfer surface separating the fluids between which thermal exchanges take place. Due to the impervious nature of the separating wall, heat exchange process is intermittent. Thus, there is no direct contact between the fluids exchanging heat. Indirect Contact Type Heat Exchangers are further classified into Direct Transfer Type, storage type, and Fluidized-bed Heat Exchangers.


Direct Contact Type- In Direct Contact Type Heat Exchangers, the heat exchange process between the fluids is continuous. Heat transfers through the separating wall into the cold liquid. Direct Contact Type Heat Exchangers are further subcategorized depending on the type of media used for heat exchange. Heat exchange in these Heat Exchangers can take place between immiscible liquids, gas & vapor or gas & liquid.

Heat Exchangers are also classified depending on the number of fluids used in the heat exchange process. There can be Two-Fluid Heat Exchangers, Three-Fluid Heat Exchangers or N- Fluid Heat Exchangers. Similarly, the classification can be on the basis of construction and other parameters.
