If you decide to build a shed from scratch yourself, you are more free with customizing it to fit your needs. You can plan for shelves and cabinets as you see fit.

Sheds are most often created with wooden walls and a concrete foundation. You will need certain tools to get the project done. If you have some woodworking experience, building a shed from scratch shouldn't be too hard or complicated. But, a beginner woodworker can also benefit from building a shed. It is a great way to improve your woodworking skills and also learn a lot about building.

Here are a few things you should learn and know about how to build a shed.

First and most obvious is knowing the purpose of your shed. Are you going to use it just for storage or do you plan on using it as a garden shed as well? You will need to prepare your plans and determine its size. Keep in mind the area which you are planning to put your shed. Use this as a guide when determining the sheds' size.

Also, make sure the area where the shed will go does not have any underground cables, wiring or pipes. Thinking ahead will save on the headaches later if any repairs need to be done on any of these underground components.

It is also important to be aware of your local zoning laws. In some areas, it is necessary to obtain a permit first before building a shed, consult your local government first.

Once you are done with your plans and you have the okay from your local zoning department, you will need to make an estimate of the materials and tools you will need to accomplish your task. The most common tools and materials that you will need are wood, nails, roofing, hinges, cement, sand, hammer, tape, saws and screws.

You will begin from the ground up. Again, check your foundation and make sure it is level. Nail your floor properly to the foundation blocks. When you finish with the floor, make the frames for the walls and roof. Keep in mind where your windows will be and build the frames accordingly.

Once your shed is built, you can now add the finishing touches. You might want to paint or varnish your shed and maybe add cabinets and shelves.
