The Benefits of Heat Pump Technology

The technology behind this idea actually takes heat from a ground source and delivers it directly to any building in order to provide a way to warm the designated area. In addition, this type of apparatus will also pre-heat hot water, reducing the load on that appliance.

Although the idea behind ground source heat pumps is simple, the entire process is fairly complicated. To start with, there has to be an area of land that is open to digging. Here trenches are dug in order to bury a series of pipes. A mixture of antifreeze and water then is used to fill the pipes. A pump then circulates this mixture through the maze of pipes where it actually absorbs heat from the ground.

There are 3 main components that make up heat pumps. In order these are the evaporator, the compressor and the condenser. The first part is the evaporator and this receives the water in the ground loop and removes the heat from this mixture of liquid. The compressor then takes a gas refrigerant and brings it to the temperature that is necessary in order for the heat distribution portion of the pump to work. The condenser is the last component of this chain to be put to work. This is where the hot water tank is fed which consequently is able to supply the distribution to the rest of the system.

The actual flow of heat from the pump is the final step in the process and it involves various types of heating solutions. This could mean a space heating model or even under the floor radiant style heat. There is also the possibility for a hot water storage unit to be implemented as well.

There are several considerations when undertaking this type of home improvement and they involve some major areas of the home and yard. It is important to take into account all of the factors before the installation begins in order to prevent wasting money on something that can't be accomplished. The first step is to evaluate the necessary area of land that is required for the underground pipes. If this isn't large enough, the project can't even be started.

The land also has to be clear of any obstacles, including tree stumps, large rocks and utility lines that could interfere with the process. And the installation itself typically costs thousands of dollars as well.

Ground source heat pumps are one of the most common ways of heating in the rural areas of the U.S. They can produce a rate of return of 4 to 1 when the unit is running efficiency. Another bonus is that it can be used to cool a house during the summer months. This can save on utility bills over the long haul. For families, this can mean savings when compared to traditional fossil fuel sources.
