The Best New Year's Eve Ever
I've always had a sense that New Year's Eve is a special time
. In the literary world, it's a night that we would call a "liminal space"--a barrier between two separate worlds--the distinct areas of 2010 and 2011 are about to intersect, and I want to make sure that the upcoming New Year's bash is the best yet! If you're still stumped about how to celebrate, then these suggestions are for you.
It's pretty cold outside, with record lows in parts of California and a blizzard barely blowing over on the East Coast, so some of you readers may feel hesitant about venturing out and about. The solution for you is to have a movie marathon and game night, with plenty of cocoa and cookies, with family members and/or friends.
If the weather in your area is fierce, then advise people to bring air mattresses or sleeping bags for bedding down for the night. And even if it isn't, that still might be a good idea. After all, you're never too old for a sleepover!
If you're looking to hit the town, be sure to make reservations at your favorite restaurant if possible, as all the most popular eateries are bound to be packed for similar celebrations. I know that I'll be eating light, however, as I am hitting my favorite Atlanta night club shortly following dinner, and the last thing I want to do is throw a wrench in my groove by overeating.
As is the case for many celebratory occasions, New Year's Eve is a time for heavy drinking for quite a few people over the legal age. I would advise you against this, however, as venues of all kinds are going to be crowded, and you will need your full judgment to stay safe.
If you do plan on drinking, even if only a little, you need to do so responsibly. Avoid driving altogether, and learn about any changes to public transportation, such as scheduling alterations. Some public transportation systems offer benefits to those that elect to use them on New Year's Eve. In my county, the bus system isn't charging a fare to give party-goers a perk for not getting behind the wheel.
This is a great time for romance, too. One of my preferred ways to spend this special night is by dedicating it solely to my spouse. We turn on a CD of our favorite romantic hits, share a bottle of sparkling cider, and watch the ball drop in Times Square, waiting to kiss until midnight. As much as I like to party, that's always a great option, too.
