The Best Rewards Credit Cards
Many banks offer rewards credit cards today
Many banks offer rewards credit cards today. The more you spend on the card, the more "perks" you get. You can generally redeem your rewards for cash or for some kind of gift card or other item. How much you'll get for the money you're spending depends on the card issuer and how generous they want to be with their program. Some cards have seemingly better programs but they also have higher fees and interest rates. Sometimes there is a catch. It's always a good idea to investigate thoroughly.
Getting the Right Card
The rewards you'll receive are only a part of the package when you get a credit card. Consider the rate of interest you'll have to pay if you don't pay your balance in full each month. Even if you generally pay off your card when the bill comes in, there could always be an emergency that could come up. Also avoid cards with annual fees, because there are plenty that don't have that requirement. Why spend money you don't have to spend? Then take a look at any other fees or costs that might come with the card, the terms and conditions, and the rewards program. You'll have the information you need to make a wise choice.
Rewards Can Really Vary
When you're taking a look at different cards and you get to comparing rewards, be sure you're comparing apples to apples. If both cards give you a point for every dollar you spend but one lets you redeem points for cash and one only allows gift cards, that might matter to you. Some rewards credit cards also only pay cash for 1/2 of the total points redeemed. For example, 2500 points would be worth $25.00 with some cards and only $12.50 with others. It's better to find that out up front than to be dissatisfied later on when you find that you aren't getting what you expected.
Using Your Reward Card
Some people get so caught up in the idea that they can use their rewards credit card to earn points and get things that they don't realize how much their spending. If you spend more than you normally would, your rewards really aren't free. It's one thing to pay your bills with the card to earn points and then pay off the card when the bill comes in. It's another thing to end up with a big balance on the card that you can't pay off, just because you're trying to earn points. With some careful thought, you'll find the right card for you.
