The Blackberry Torch Provides Loads Of Impressive Features by:Chris Westley

Blackberry has recently released a new handset

, the Torch 9800. This Smartphone offers the combination of a TFT capacitive touchscreen, along with a full QWERTY keyboard which slides out from beneath the screen. As with many other handsets from the manufacturer, it is sure to appeal to the business user looking for a productivity tool and reliable communication device.

The dimensions of the Blackberry Torch are 111x 62x 14.6 mm. Its thickness is impressive for a handset with a separate keyboard unit, and it is also lightweight at just 161 g. The 3.2" TFT capacitive touchscreen can display an astonishing 16M colours within its pixel setup of 360x 480. As well as the touch screen and separate keyboard, users also have the option of navigating the user interface by using an optical trackpad.

In order to alert users to incoming calls and messages, the Blackberry Torch offers both ringing (with the bonus of supporting MP3 ringtones) and vibrate functions, the latter ideal for situations such as meetings where the phone must be on silent.

A useful 4 GB of internal storage is provided as standard, which can hold a large number of files such as documents or music tracks. Along with the standard memory, there is also an integrated micro SD card slot which has a 4 GB card pre-installed. This can, however be replaced with a card of up to 32 GB, providing the potential to store thousands of files.

A reliable cellular network connection is achieved thanks to both GPRS and EDGE, both of which are provided in class 10 versions. Internet access relies on HSDPA connection in 3G covered areas. A faster browsing experience can be made possible though, thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity which takes advantage of the signals provided by wireless Internet routers in the same vicinity as a handset.

A handy 5 megapixel camera is built into the handset which does a great job of taking high quality still images as well as video footage. There are a number of built in features which aid the process of taking high quality pictures, such as Autofocus, image stabilisation and an LED flash. Another feature of the camera is geo-tagging, which based on GPS, automatically records the location at which a photo was taken.

The operating system of choice is Blackberry OS 6.0, which works in conjunction with a 624 MHz processor to provide an impressive user experience. Standard features include a document viewer which is compatible with Microsoft Office documents, as well as a handy organiser and voice memo recorder. Entertainment features include a versatile media player which supports several different file formats of music and video files, as well as a number of pre-installed games with access to additional downloadable games.

Existing fans of the Blackberry brand are sure to appreciate the styling and user interface of the Blackberry Torch 9800. An ideal handset for the business user or student, it is the perfect tool to get the job done.
