The Kenyan buffalo lives in great herds in the savanna parts of the country. It is one of the largest mammals in the country. It is a grazer and weighs about 900 kgs. Kenya having a tropical climate condition, it is very conducive for the breeding of these animals. The animal is known to have a very bad temper and can tear up a person in seconds once provoked. Its horns are very sharp and it uses them to drive away predators. Even lions fear these agile grazers.

Being grazers, it can be found in densely vegetated areas near water ways and swamps. It does not have many predators because of its size and temper. The herd works as a team to protect their calves. In case of danger, the calves stick at the middle and the mature bulls drive off any predator. In case one of them is caught by the predators, they work as a team to rescue it. They are very social animals.

Buffalo's gestation period takes twelve months. After the calf is born it is hidden in the bushes where the mother nurses it. After a few weeks, it is allowed to join the herd. When lions are preying on them, they must work as a team. No single lion can fell down a mature buffalo. It can end up being killed or if it is lucky, it is badly injured. The buffalo's site is poor at night therefore the predators take advantage of this and prey them at night.
