A business intelligence analysts job description may not always be immediately clear, but it usually consists of a few main tasks. Companies looking to hire this position need a business intelligence (BI) analyst to work with BI software systems. This includes working with databases and data warehouses. Some popular software that companies use for this is SQL Server Integration Services and Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services.
You will be required to provide application analysis and data modeling design to collect data in some instances. This data would need to be recorded to the company's centralized data warehouse. Another task related to this may include providing query and reporting analysis tools to access this data archive.
There may be multiple data systems involved and you would be required to help make sharing data between these systems possible. This task can include standardizing data collection, developing methods for database design and validation reports.
The person working this position is expected to maintain high levels of BI availability by providing support functions and thoroughly testing. It is usually necessary to work with other business units and report to the BI manager in some companies. Also you may need t o work with other business analysts to merge data from other business source systems. A BI analyst should also know how to extract data from these warehouses and present them in user friendly ways for other viewers.
Experience required for this position is the standard 4 year degree. Generally some experience with IT is a really big plus. However, having used Microsoft SQL Server Reporting and SQL Server Integration Services is a must. It is preferred to have experience with data warehouse analysis and design was well. Employers are looking for someone with in-depth knowledge of data warehouse techniques and modeling.
