The Business of ethics – Servolve's way of doing things

The Business of ethics Servolve's way of doing things

Recently, I came across an article called "the Business of ethics", which detailed about how Kofi Annan the former Un Secretary general developed ethical guidelines that Companies who want to be a force for good in the world could agree to live by. As per his vision and the agreement reached by top professionals across the globe, the principles of UNGC United Nations Global Compact, was formed to uphold the values of human rights, good labour relations, fight corruption and protect the environment.

Interestingly I feel that the Servolve family has adopted some of these principles in our day to day working model. There are 10 guiding principles laid down by the then UN Council. If I align them to Servolve's way of doing things, I see the following,

HUMAN RIGHTS

1. Support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights

In our area of work, we don't usually indulge in abusing human rights, we respect everyone who comes to us and that respect comes back to us in equal measure

2. Non complicity with regards to human rights abuses

Servolve supports the fight for basic freedom and rights for an individual in his or her work place. We stand strong when it comes to abuse of individuals of both genders in the work place. Our Management is very open to suggestions from employees and always render a listening ear to any employee who needs to talk

3. Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining

Understood, accepted and practiced. Freedom is the key to creativity in the Servolve family. When we incorporate a company, or do something else for a client, we are not just doing a service, we are creating a relation.

4. The elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour

This is irrelevant in our business, but Servolve's energies will always be used to counter anything that is detrimental to the interests of human beings and their basic rights.

5. The effective abolition of child labour

100% support from Servolve for this cause now and at all times to come

6. The elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation

This is so relevant in modern times. We at Servolve believe in equal opportunity employment, hence if we feel you will fit, irrespective of caste, creed, race, gender, or anything else, the job is yours!

THE ENVIRONMENT

7. Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges

8. Undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility and

9. Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies

We support all causes to ensure that the earth we live in is sustained and maintained for our future generations, we have potted plants whom our team members have lovingly named Harvey and Daisy, and a small Chinese bamboo, they are indeed a pleasure to watch and we take care that they are watered and nurtured, this is a process that our Director - George Mathew initiated and we have followed. We switch off all lights and main switch outlets after office hours and use air conditioning only as much as needed.

We have extended our support for a green earth by taking part in "Earth Hour -2011", we will continue our patronage for a "HEALTHY PLANET", at the workplace and at home - this is something no one can escape, we are proud supporters of this noble cause.

CORRUPTION

10. Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery

Thankfully, Servolve works in Singapore where such problems are either minimal or totally rare, we deal with government agencies like Ministry of Manpower, Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority . Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, etc in Singapore on a regular basis. We have found that at all times; they have been supportive to our cause and has helped the Company grow. When there are issues, they provide solutions and not means by which the law can be circumvented. Kudos to the many government officials who strive to make sure Singapore is corruption free, yes! there might be exceptions, we are yet to meet one though! Thank you Singapore!!

There are many who might think, yes we are a small company now, it is easier for us to follow rules and regulations than a Company with bigger things at stake. But I feel it is the attitude than anything else. Remember a book called Winners Never Cheat, by Jon Huntsman SR, Founder of the Huntsman Corporation and father of the potential next Republican candidate for Presidency in 2012, he owned it big, he did it big, his attitude was right. To do the right thing, all you need is courage!
