The Career Ladder For Virtual Assistants

Whatever the reasons behind your decision to start working as a virtual assistant

, you have probably wondered at some point in time, if this is what you will be doing for the rest of your life, and if you are happy with that.

Lets face it. The work of a virtual assistant is not always terribly exciting or challenging. Many of the tasks that are delegated to virtual assistants are mundane, repetitive and simple. This reality can take a huge toll on even the most motivated of virtual assistants. Some virtual assistants end up leaving the industry feeling like they were not living up to their full potential, or just thinking that there is no career growth possible in the virtual assistant field.

This is not true! There is a lot of opportunity for career development for virtual assistants, especially those that are committed and diligent. With the rise in the growth of the field, especially in countries like the Philippines and India, the term virtual assistant has begun to take on a wide range of meanings as more and more people begin paying attention to the ways in which online services are changing the way we do business.

Still doubtful about your career options as a virtual assistant? Here is just a snapshot of the kind of trajectory that many virtual assistants follow:

1. Virtual Assistant

Everyone starts somewhere. So yes, you may have to edit a few documents, transcribe some recipes, or enter sheets and sheets of data during your first few years. Dont think of this as a bad thing though. Traditional virtual assistants gain a wide range of experiences and build a strong client network that could form the basis for a booming career.

2. A VA Team

As your solo business grows, you may find that the demand for your services is so high that you cant keep up with it on your own. Its natural to go from being a solo entrepreneur to forming a team of virtual assistants, with skills that complement each other. Clients love these teams, because they get to utilize these different skills, without doing additional outsourcing, and if one assistant is unable to do the work, theres always another who can support them.

3. Online Business Manager

So you have been the primary virtual assistant in your team for some time now. You have worked great together and have developed excellent relationships with your clients. You personally, have honed your team and project management skills and you think youre ready to go even further. You can break out on your own, or in addition to still working within your team, and start offering project management services to clients. You may find yourself being entrusted with large, expansion and organizational development projects a far cry from your data entry days.

4. Expert Consultant

Over your years as a virtual assistant and an online business manager you have gained a lot of experience and knowledge. You were probably able to develop your skills in one area in particular, maybe marketing, recruitment, or strategy. Now, you are likely to be classed as an expert consultant, and will be contracted by clients to advise them on your area of expertise. You will be able to help shape the course of your clients businesses and none of this would have happened without completing your first few years as a virtual assistant.
