The Charms Of Halong Bay

The legendary natural landscape is located in the province of Quang Ninh

, in the north of the Asian country, in front of Haiphong harbor, the most important of the nation and located in the Gulf of Tonkin. His legendary name has a meaning: for Halong means "descending dragon," and has been extracted from a typical local legend.

With an area of 1 553 square kilometers and more than 1900 islands and islets, Halong Bay transcends for its beautiful and strange rock formations, as well as for its countless caves. It is said that in Halong everything has its history, from the caves to the reefs of limestone and shale rock, which are always strangely named by the local fishermen. In the case of the names of rocks this is very curious, and this is maybe due to the shape that nature has given to them.

There is a familiarity with the animals in the nomenclature of each of them and this can be seen as a visual whim of Mother Earth. Thus, there is an elevation called Dog, and others who respond to Turtle and Toad. Among the caves stand out the Divine Residence (Thien Cung), the Grotto of the driftwood (Van Dau), The Surprise Grotto (Son Sot) and Cave of the Three Palaces (Tam Cung). The biodiversity stands out in Halong since it is grouped in a variety of forest ecosystems inundated with sea water, coral reefs, and rainforests with countless species of animals and plants.

Halong Bay was one of the earliest human settlements in the country, so archeological sites as Dong Mang, Xich Tho, Soi Nhu, and Thoi Gieng become important areas for Vietnam holidays. In ancient times the bay was a hiding place for thieves, refugees and persecuted people, thanks to the geographical layout of the islands. Among the historical events that took place there are the two naval battles against foreign aggressors, held specifically in the Bach Dang River.

Also famous are other geographical sites such as Van Don, a former commercial port, and the mountain of the poem, where emperors engraved their poems. Halong Bay was declared in 1994 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Since November 11, 2011 is considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world. For all these reasons, this fascinating Vietnamese passage stands today as a destination for visitors to the Asian nation.
