The Chinese and Education
"If I hold up one corner of a square and a man cannot come back to me with the other three, I won't bother to go over the point again," conceivably an intemperate remark, but representative of a principle of instruction to those familiar with the teachings of Confucius.
Who was this man Confucius or as the Chinese would say Kongfuzi? He was a beneficiary of an aristocratic education and his objective was to be a key adviser to an important ruler. Coming up short in that effort, Confucius turned to teaching to support himself. As with many historical figures, that are often quoted, there exist no recorded writings by Confucius. His famous teachings were compiled after his death by his disciples called "Analects."
You know them, you've read them, you've seen and heard them on Saturday morning cartoons as a kid, "Confucius says, early to bedetc.etc..." Who hasn't snapped open a Chinese fortune Cookie (which isn't really so Chinese) and read some supposed Confucius analect stereotypically opening with the refrain, "Confucius says, ...," or maybe you remember the famous Charlie Chan serials where the lead character quoted Confucian maxims.
To see Confucius teachings just observe Chinese behavior as it relates to education and parental/child interaction. This can also be observed in most other Asian societies, Japan, Korea, etc., where Confucian principles were disseminated. Most Asian cultures venerate its older citizens. This represents one of the most important Confucian beliefsthe family, that is, the filial relationship of obedience owed by the child to the parent. The expectations for children to fulfill parental requirements take on a more obligatory purpose due to Confucian teachingsparamount is education and the result it offers. These aren't religious convictions, although Confucianism is often confused as such, it does, however, offer teachings that pertain to moral behavior and a hierarchal respect for ones superior.
Confucius emphasized the finding of a good teacher, someone older, and imitating his words and actions. He derides those who rely on innate knowledge or insight stating that the understanding of a subject only comes from long and cautious study. "[He] who learns but does not think is lost. He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger"
