The Cold, Hard Truth

I entered college believing, as so many young people do, that 4 years of hard work, ending with a degree, would be my ticket to success out in the real world. Now, four years later, with a degree almost in hand, and the US economy in shambles, I stood very humbled and shocked, knowing that my real education had just begun. Having mailed hundreds of resumes, with no success, I realized that today's employers require experience, and they certainly have hundreds of experienced applicants for every position. Nearing graduation, I was somewhat convinced that perhaps I had squandered $80,000 on an education that would leave me flippin' burgers at McDonalds!

Just prior to graduation, my father called with a business proposition. It seems that he and a friend had come up with a tentative plan to start an "organic" pest control company in Florida, and together they had made contacts with a company that manufactured products that we could use. The idea of not only starting a new company, but a company that was "Green" and could set its own course..........the whole thing was exciting and seemed the perfect way to make practical use of my degree in Entrepreneurial Studies. Since I was about to graduate and also have my first child, I jumped at the opportunity. The new company, Nature's Best Organic Pest Control, was launched in June of this year.

The start-up of the company has been challenging and very interesting, from the original formation of the legal entity to achieving licensing in Florida. We have set up our accounting system, developed marketing pieces and strategy, trained in product use and procedures, developed our web site, and continue to sell ourselves and our product every day. The company is beginning to show steady growth, and we have some large and interesting prospects in front of us.

It is important that all of those folks planning to finish their education in the next few years realize the difficulty of our current economy. Moreover, even when the economy improves, it will be extremely important that college students be determined (and trained) to make their own luck. The American Dream is not a gift.........it is a possibility for those who are educated, who are self-motivated and self-disciplined. Look for a niche.........start a business........work it 24 hours a day.........create the next great company.
