The Colors Of Fes And Its Main Attractions
Fes is a city of many colors, and the noise here can be quite overwhelming if you are not used to the way people love to live here
. Still, this is a very largely appreciated tourist destination with plenty of things to see and do.
The Medieval Medina in Fes is one place to visit as a tourist. The place is quite crowded and there is heavy shopping that takes place here. The street vendors will try to drag you towards their stalls, offering you water or olives, which are among the most appreciated commodities here. You can do some shopping yourself, or you can watch the veiled women purchasing their needed groceries from the loud street vendors.
The Medieval Medina is also a place where you can admire the architecture of the old tanneries and the madrasas. The place can be quite confusing as there are thousands of little streets comprised in the place, so it is best to go there accompanied by a knowledgeable guide.
There are different areas where you may like to shop. For instance, Souk Triba is the perfect spot for electronics and cosmetics, Souk Tallis is for people that want to buy cloth or wool, and Souk Selham is the place where vendors sell haberdashery. In order to purchase a ceremonial outfit, the best spot is Chemmaine Souk.
Everywhere you go, you will be accompanied by a particular smell which comes from the many tanneries scattered around Fes. If you cannot put your finger on what makes the leather being processed here smell so bad, here is a little piece of info that you may like to overlook: the staff hired by these tanneries use bird dropping when curing the leather to make it softer.
Architecture is really amazing in Fes. Christian churches, Jewish places of worshiping and Islamic buildings can be seen everywhere. The Karaouine Mosque is considered to be the second sized mosque in all Morocco. You cannot go inside as access is forbidden for non-Muslims, but you can admire the architecture outside.
The Andalusian neighborhood is the best place to admire the beautiful architecture in Fes. Spanish exiles came here some time ago and their constructions are pretty amazing. Do not forget to visit the el Sehri Madrasa, the Seffarine Madrasa and the Sahrij Madrasa where you can see the beautiful art of the people that used all their talent to build these beautiful and enthralling places.
Another spot you must visit in Fes is Dar Batha Museum, which is housed by a summer palace built during the 19th century by Sultan Moulay al-Hassan I. Here you can admire Fassi items, decorated furniture dating from the 18th century. Other items include embroidered clothing, jewelry and musical instruments, as well as some of the most beautiful carpets ever made by Berbers. Take plenty of time to visit the museum and the palace in order to add something important to remember from your trip to Fes.
