The Comfort Of Hot Water Bottles In The Uk

If you have never experienced the comfort and feelings of security that a hot water

bottle can bring then you are missing out on one of life's little pleasures. Those of us in the chilly UK tend to use them for a number of purposes, not just warming a cold bed.

The weather in the UK is decidedly unpredictable, and one way of keeping warm when you are in bed, or even when you are seated in an armchair, is to have a hot water bottle to cuddle up with. Yes, you can have an electric blanket to keep you cosy on a cold night, but it doesn't give the same sense of pleasure as getting into a bed with one warm spot and something cosy to put your feet on.

Most people in England will have one because it can also be a great source of comfort if you have backache or stomach cramps. Direct heat applied to those areas can give some relief from the pain. In the cold winter months, especially if you suffer from arthritis and other conditions made worse by the cold and damp, a hot water bottle can be a great comfort too.

In the past there were Victorian stone hot water bottles, and later on rubber ones. Years ago people used to keep their rubber ones hanging from a hook in the kitchen, ready to be filled at night before they went to bed. The old rubber would perish over time and they were not that well made. The quality of the rubber used these days is infinitely superior.

Nowadays there is a much wider choice of bottles too. Rubber hot water bottles are made from non-perishable rubber with a safety stopper and you can get thermoplastic versions too. Both come in a variety of shapes and colours, such as one that has been made to look like a football, or another like a scent bottle. Some mini bottles are ideal for children or to pack in your suitcase for comfort when you are away, especially if you are camping in the UK.

You can alos buy covers that make great gifts for someone who is old or sick. These come in a range of styles and the faux fur ones have a luxurious look and feel. You can get covers to match the colour of the hot water bottle in different fabrics and styles, including knitted jumper style covers or soft luxurious velvety ones.

You probably have to live in an unpredictable climate to appreciate the comfort of a bed that holds the warmth of a hot water bottle. If you suffer from aches and pains however, no matter where you, live a hot water bottle held against the afflicted part will give you some ease and comfort. Every home in the UK should have at least one, but preferably more.
