The Common Hearing Test With Audiometer

People who wish to undergo a hearing test usually have a suspicion that there is something wrong with their ability to receive sounds and noises

. Many people cannot easily detect if they have impairment in this sense, especially when the deterioration happened gradually. In some cases, it is people who are close to them who might comment or bring it to their attention that the individual has some difficulty with listening to their conversation or understanding low-pitched noise and voices. When this is brought to the attention of the individual it is possible that he or she might go for an evaluation.

Audiometer

The audiometer hearing test is a procedure that will be able to determine the extent of the impairment that the person may have with regards to his ability to hear. It basically measures the ability of the person to hear, receive and perceive sounds in different frequencies and loudness. The patient is placed in a soundproof booth or small room and equipped with headphones or earphones, which will help with the implementation of the evaluation. The audiologist will then present him or her with several sounds and tones, which are all optimal in determining if the individual has some form of impairment and its severity. The person undergoing the evaluation will be instructed to acknowledge whether or not he or she has received the tone or not by giving a signal. In most cases, the signal may be a raised hand or pressing a predetermined button provided inside the soundproof booth. The expert who is giving the hearing test will be able to determine in which aspect the person may have some impairment. A graph is prepared with both the frequency and the loudness listed down and points will be plotted on it. By reading the results of the graph, the expert will be able to recommend what needs to be done in order for the patient to be treated.

Other Tests

There are other types of tests and screening that can also determine other aspects of deafness that a person might have. One such hearing test uses a tuning fork to enable the patient to feel the vibration. It can also help determine which ear the individual may have some form of impairment. This kind of evaluation can actually determine what type of loss the patient has, either conductive (loss springing from problems in the outer or middle ear) or sensorineural (issues that come from problems with the cochlea) or neural (issues with the auditory nerve and pathways of the brain. Other types of evaluation may include speech in which the patient is encouraged to repeat what he or she has heard and a tympanogram, which will help the audiologist measure how well the parts of the ear are working. An acoustic reflex evaluation is also another way to determine what type of loss the individual may have.

Using a hearing test is a necessary step to determining the extent of a person's loss of the ability to hear.
