and types of cables that are needed to connect the various components of the computer. The computer cable sadly is not just one single cable but several varieties with varying purposes for each cable. Each type of computer cable fits into a special port designed for that cable. There are many types of computer cables and here are some of the most common types explained.
The serial type computer cable is one of the age old computer cables and is rarely in use nowadays. It was used to connect monitors, keyboards and other peripheral devices to the CPU. A serial port still exists in most standard CPU's though it isnt in much use. There are two types of the serial port, with nine and twenty five pins. Then exist the PS/2 cables which are used to connect the keyboard or mouse. This too is not frequently used today. We also have the 3 pin cables used mainly for power supply from the power socket to the CPU and other peripherals like a printer. The 3 pin cable is also used to power the monitor from the CPU.
The most common type of computer cable that is used nowadays is the USB cable. Short for Universal Serial Bus, It is the most versatile of connectivity methods allowing for very fast rates of transfer of data. One USB port can hold up to 1024 subsequent USB connections. It has vast potential and is the single most preferred computer cable.
