Respiratory problems are also commonly associated with carrying excess body fat, due to the stress on the cardiovascular system. Overweight or obese people tend to suffer from various breathing difficulties, such as sleep apnea.
Furthermore, recent studies have suggested a connection between excess body fat and the development of certain forms of cancer. Some examples are colon and prostate cancer in men, and uterine and breast cancer in women.
Excess body fat has even been linked to memory loss, according to a recent study of older women. The degree to which the subjects experienced cognitive difficulties seemed to vary based on whether the fat was located on the hips or the waist.
Fortunately, efforts to lose excess body fat can result in a decreased risk of many of the health problems mentioned here. It is never too late to improve one's eating habits and increase one's amount of physical activity. Specifically, following a low-fat diet and losing weight can slow down or even reverse the affects of health conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes.
